General information on Palau

Climate

We are only 7 degrees north of the equator and our climate is tropical. The trade winds provide cooling breezes and the rainy season gives us lush, tropical growth.

Currency

The currency in Chuuk is the US dollar. Major credit cards and travelers checks are also widely accepted.

Identification

You do not need a passport to travel through Micronesia but if you have one bring it with you. Otherwise you will need a picture ID such as a drivers license and also a birth certificate.

Language

Everyone speaks English but if you learn a few local phrases, you'll probably get a big smile in return!

Diving Permit

If you are planning on diving in Chuuk during your visit, you will need a Chuuk Dive Permit. These will be arranged for you by your dive operator.

Dive Equipment

Most dive shops have full equipment rental which you can arrange for in advance. Diving fees include tanks, weight belt and weights. Most divers are more comfortable with their own dive gear so bring what you think you want to use.

What to wear

Dress is casual, shorts and t-shirts are widely acceptable on the resort grounds and of course on the dive boats. For women, local custom is to wear a skirt or wrap to cover the thighs when away from the resort. Light clothing is comfortable in our climate.

What to bring

In our tropical climate, you will want protection from the sun - sunscreen and hats. Dive skins (2 or 3 mm) are enough to keep you warm and also protect you from the sun when snorkeling or traveling in the boats.
